Who is required to operate a payroll?
Any company employing an individual must register as an employer with HMRC and set up a PAYE (Pay As You Earn) scheme. The PAYE scheme is HMRC’s way of collecting income tax and National Insurance from employees at source.
Under the RTI (Real Time Information) reporting rules, employers are required to report payroll almost in ‘real time’ to HMRC. Failure to do so may result in fines. Accuracy is also key as incorrect reporting, even if it is an innocent mistake, may also lead to the imposition of penalties.
